2 ½ OUT OF 5 ON KENDOG’S BARKOMETER!

 3001

Howdy folks! It’s The Kendog!

As a big fan of 2007’s 300, I found myself looking forward to the next installment in Frank Miller’s mythological comic series detailing his take on the war between the Greeks and the Persian Empire. 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE looks like a 300 movie and acts like a 300 movie, but unfortunately plays and feels like a well-done piece of fan fiction, lacking the dramatic momentum or manic energy of the original film. It’s not awful, but the new 300 film is terribly disappointing.

The groundbreaking animated series ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE was a little before my time, but I remember watching it most weekday mornings as it appeared in reruns before I went to school. At my tender young age many of the jokes flew over my head, but I found the shorts, including Mr. Sherman and Peabody, very funny, full of visual flair and some spectacular puns. I’m pleased to announce that the inevitable big screen version of MR. PEABODY AND SHERMAN hews closely enough to the original series to please fans while providing enough emotional resonance to fill a feature length film.

I can only hope that when I hit my sixties I look as good and move as well as Liam Neeson. The man is basically an Irish Harrison Ford. Starting off with mostly character roles and serious dramatic fare, Neeson has reinvented himself as an action hero. He’s fit, tough, yet not so overly muscular or invincible as to not relate to the audience. It’s made him quite popular at this stage of his career, with movies like TAKEN, TAKEN 2, and the excellent THE GREY under his belt. I’m pleased to report that his latest vehicle, NON-STOP, is another entertaining notch in Neeson’s action belt.

Howdy folks!  It's The Kendog!

You know, memory is a funny thing.  I hadn't thought about Harold Ramis in years and the most recent happened to come when I reviewed the dreadful comedy YEAR ONE, which turned out to be Ramis' last directed film.  Still his passing at the age of 69 hit me like a blow to the gut.  He was one the defining, if understated, comedic talents of the 1980s and 90s, which means I grew up on his films.  Just take a listen to his legacy of work:  CADDYSHACK, ANIMAL HOUSE, STRIPES, NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION, GHOSTBUSTERS I AND II, GROUNDHOG DAY, among others.  Truly a wonderful talent that will be missed anyone who enjoyed his particular brand of creative genius.  My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

I have to say it’s good to see Kevin Costner back in the spotlight again. It’s still a far cry from the days of DANCES WOLVES and THE BODYGUARD, but at least he’s not doing direct to video dreck like THE NEW DAUGHTER.   3 DAYS TO KILL is a fine return to form for Costner. Too bad the movie doesn’t quite live up to Costner’s performance.
