Just Like Old Times For Sacramento'sThree-Time Champion Sirens
Just off the telephone with my cousin Brenda, also known as the "Boss" around Siren town. Brenda is Brenda Whitten. She is a proud co- owner of the Sacramento Sirens who are celebrating their tenth year in existence. And what a ten years its been. The Sirens are three time IWFL champions(2003, 2004, 2005). They are bringing back many members of the coaching staff that led that team to three consecutive titles. Among them, Myron Brown (Offensive Coordinator). Joe Spatafore (defensive coordinator), Brian McCann (defensive line coach), Steve Aerosmith (tight end and reciever coach) Margie Wells who played for the team for three seasons has been coaching the offensive line since '07. Martin Anderson coaches the linebackers. David Bradford coaches the defensive backs. Coach Frankie and Julie Schokley coach the running backs. Jeff Waymeyer is in his third year as an assistant with the Sirens, The roster is made up of 12 rookies and 35 veterans. The veterans act as independent mentors for the rookies. There are interesting stories such as Noriko Kokura. Cousin Brenda says, "Noriko, a half back for the Sirens, has flown to Sacramento from Japan for three years to play for the Sirens. She stays for the season and then flys back home." She plays co-ed football in Japan where she is very popular. Shantell Powers returns as the Sirens quarterback. Trewdy Wolf is a solid backup. Players ages range from the teens to the forty's. Practices are grueling. These ladies are no joke. They practice Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Keep in mind some of these women work full-time. Cousin Brenda tells me, "we have teachers, lawyers, nurses playing for us. Some are mothers; This is a big commitment for them." She also admits, "being a mom and a football player can be a challenge. Ideally, we would like to raise enough funds for a daycare program for practice times." "One of the real thrills," says cousin Brenda, is "seeing the husbands bring the kids out on Saturdays to watch mom play football. It's really amazing!"
The team has seen some nice crowds over the years. This season will be their second at Natomas High School.Games are played Saturday's at 6 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m. The Sirens first game is April 3 at Natomas High School vs the Bay Area Bandits.
The Sirens will be participating in this Saturday's St. Patrick's Day Parade in Old Town Sacramento. They'll be wearing their jerseys. Please say hi and show them your love. Say hi to Cousin Brenda for me.
I received an email containing these photos from Jack. Jack visits our site and listens to me on NEWSTALK 1530 KFBK and I want to personally thank you for that. They are incredible. You are very lucky to have had that point of view during that time and at Edmonds Field, (now a Target store). As you may know, my father Bill Walsh played for the Solons. His story with them is unique and I want to tell it here on my site in the very near future.
I recently purchased two of the lights (seen in both photos), four seats, and most special of all to me, the railings and gate from the Solons dugout (seen just behind the catcher in both photos).
Hey Pat,
I thought you might enjoy seeing these. I took and developed these shots when I was a kid. My grandfather took me to this exhibition game between the Giants and Indians
Top picture: Could that be Mays at bat? Cepeda is of course in the on deck circle.
Bottom picture is obvious.
I sat right behind the on deck circle.

Orlando Cepeda waits on deck while the "Sey Hey Kid" takes his swats at the plate on a gorgeous day at Sacramento's Edmonds Field.
Willie Mays watches Willie McCovey ready for his cuts while he awaits his turn at the dish.

RAMS ACQUIRE McFEELY- REST OF THE LEAGUE UNIMPRESSED
Written by Pat Walsh

Ram fans shocked over acquisition of the long-time Mr. Roger's mailman.
Ram fans looking for answers after last year's 1-15 debacle, are left scratching their heads over hearing the news that the team has signed long-time Mr. Rogers mailman Mr. McFeely as the team's new quarterback. McFeely, or, the "Mailman," because he "delivers the goods," gets a two year, six million dollar deal with St. Louis. The move should send ripples throughout the rest of the league as it was most unexpected. Not a single NFL prognosticator had the Rams, or any other team for that matter, making a move for the 72 year old former mail carrier who's real name is David Newell. The acquisition leaves one wondering, what is next for this once-proud franchise? How about the Maytag Repairman? He has nothing to do. But the Rams need swagger. What about some of those evil flying monkeys from the Wizard Of Oz? As far as I'm concerned... wait... uh... what? Whoa... boy do I feel stupid. I am just getting word that it isn't Mr. McFeely that the Rams have acquired, it's A.J. Feeley. Wow, that's embarrassing. Not so much my mistake, but the A.J. Feeley move. I think I would have rather had the "Mailman."
AP - Sean Evans had 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead St. John's to a 73-51 victory over Connecticut on Tuesday, extending the Huskies' losing streak in the Big East tournament to six games and in effect ending their chance for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
AFP - Arsenal swept into the Champions League quarter-finals as Nicklas Bendtner silenced his critics with a hat-trick in a majestic 5-0 win against Porto on Tuesday.
AP - David Murphy has started in every slot of the Texas batting order — one through nine — and only teammates Michael Young and Ian Kinsler have played more games for the Rangers the past three seasons.
AP - Top prospect Stephen Strasburg made his spring training debut on Tuesday, pitching two scoreless innings in the Washington Nationals' 9-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers.
